William Ralston Shedden-Ralston (1828-1889) was a British folklorist and writer who became famous as a translator from Russia. He was in Russia a number of times where he made friends with major Russian writers of those times such as Turgenev and Afanasyev.

This classical Russian fairy-tale that was collected and translated by William Ralston Shedden-Ralston. The story tells us of two men: smith and tailor have never seen any harm and evil in the world so they decided to go in search of it. They had a long journey and finally could find a strange cottage in the wood where they met a tall woman, lank, crooked, with only one eye. Smith and Tailor didn't have any idea who she was but the feeling of evil coming out from her was perfect.
