Charlotte Mary Yonge (11 Aug 1823 – 24 May 1901) was an English novelist. Her most known works are The Heir of Redclyffe, that became her fist success, and Heartsease and The Daisy Chain.  History of Christian Names by her was claimed to be the first serious work on the matter.
Hopes and Fears, or Scenes From Life of a Spinster is novel by Charlotte Yonge. The story is set in the middle of XIX century in Britain. It was a time when due to Napolenoc Wars women outnumbered men. A lot of girls and ladies had no chance for marriage and thus became spinsters. This novel is devoted to daily life, to sorrows and delight of one such woman, that is generalized portrait of all of them.
