Captain Trey Blexro, a Hrexan commander, has laid siege to Xinar, the Cuian homeworld. He is one of many Hrexan invading many worlds throughout the known galaxy with hopes of ruling an entire quadrant if not the galaxy. However, the Cuians are withstanding his invasion, for the moment.

Stella Raffaella, a Jannaxian commander, battles the Hrexan invasion on her homeworld of Janx and is winning. The Hrexan are slowly retreating. Her wins against the Hrexan attract the attention of smaller, distressed duchies and clans. Agreeing to fight alongside her, they create a new confederacy, the Jannaxian Confederacy, one determined to drive the Hrexan from the quadrant and beyond.

Meanwhile, the Cuians have sent a request to the Lledumar, their galactic neighbours, beseeching their help in their life-threatening battle with the Hrexan. The Lledumarian Duke, Dweg Lohwrune, is torn between duty and desire. If he disagrees and Xinar falls, he'll be fighting the Hrexan on Lled within a few weeks. If he agrees, he believes he'll be sending his armies to certain death. Either choice seems bad. What to do in this time of uncertainty? A time of unprecedented upheaval.
