Tulipa Greigli – Greig’s Tulip Historical Information. The tulipa Greigii was described by Eduard von Regel as a tulip from the Karatau Mountains, initially as a variety of the Altai tulip (Tulipa altaica var. karatavica, 1868). Later in 1873 it was described as a species in its own right and named in honour of Samuil Alexeyevich Greig (1827-1887) by the President of the Russian Horticultural Society. This particular tulip flowers from early April to early June and multiplies in June or July. Distribution in Kazakhstan From the northern deserts (in the environs of Kyzylorda) through the mountains and valleys of the Tien Shan as far as the Kurdai Pass (Zhambyl, South Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda Regions). Gradually bulbs of this tulip spread through various countries of Europe. Protection in Kazakhstan This tulip has been entered in the Red Book of Endangered Species and is a protected species in the Aksu-Dzhabagly Reserve, the Botanical Protected Area of “Berkara” (in the Zhambyl Region) and the specialized Protected Area, “Krasnaya Gorka” [Red Mountain] (in the Tyulkubas District of the South Kazakhstan Region
