When Edwin Salt paid a woman to marry him, invested his life savings in a pack horse, and a sack of flour, then struggled up the rugged Taramakau Valley until he could go no further, he didn't realise he was creating a town. A hundred and fifty years later, the Salt dynasty has died out, but the town lives on. As with many small towns, its reason has become irrelevant, and its residents struggle for purpose.

These are New Zealand stories, West Coast stories, leavened with the optimism and good humour characteristic of the people who live in this environment.

First published in December 2012, 'Salt of the Earth' is a collection of twenty-five short stories. The characters lives intertwine, so that the book can also be read as a novel.
