Richard Kauffman was a noteworthy star in baseball, football, and basketball at Susquehanna University, in the early 20th Century. He also coached the teams on which he played. My E-Book looks at his life as an athlete, as well as his ancestry. I have used ancestry records to detail much about Kauffman's family. "Dick" was from East Lewisburg, the son of a cabinetmaker. He lived most of his life in Pennsylvania, studying in Selinsgrove and residing in Mifflinburg in his later years. He had a very short career in major league baseball, in 1914-1915. I have corrected through research one story which stated, erroneously, that Kauffman's major league career was ended after being hit by a fastball thrown by Washington Senators' pitcher, Walter Perry Johnson. Had the St. Louis Browns had the option of a designated hitter, Dick Kauffman might have made it longer in the majors. Instead he was vulnerable, as a first baseman, when the Browns signed future Hall of Fame 1st baseman, George Sisler, from the University of Michigan. Dick continued to play through 1921 with the Nashville Volunteers and the Atlanta Crackers. He worked in the flour mill industry as an executive and salesman. He died in Mifflinburg, PA in April 1948.
