Rejecting the traditional pampered role normal for a woman of her class, Irene decides to move to Berlin. She has always had very specific ideas about love and marriage, but her life changes when she accepts a position as a live-in companion in a fragmented household.

FROM "RESOLUTION"

“All aboard for Berlin!” called the porter in a sharp voice as he passed through the waiting room.

“He was probably a corporal at some time,” remarked Frau Ebermann as she reached for Irene’s hand luggage.

Outside, on the asphalted walkway, a servant carrying Irene’s coat and footstool was pacing back and forth.

The express train from Vienna had just arrived.

“This lady is traveling to Berlin, conductor,” explained Frau Ebermann. Her maternal instincts were alert once more, and despite Irene’s seeming independence, Frau Ebermann was worried for her.
