Money has always been in short supply in the ex-mining village of Glanddu. Its bottom-dwelling rugby club owes its survival to the rule of its formidable chairwoman, Gloria Bowen Thomas, and the financial wizardry of its treasurer in cooking the books. Only the prize money for the leagues winners can stave off bankruptcy or worse: amalgamation with its hated neighbour, Brynddu.
Three people arrive in the village during the rugby season. Wilson, a recently retired giant of English rugby, takes his boots out of mothballs. Bolotnikov, a Russian gangster, stumbles upon some shady business opportunities. Rhiannon Griffiths, a Hollywood film star, returns to her childhood home to build a shrine for her adoring fans. Can these three odd bedfellows change the fate of the club?
