With the fanatical resistance of the Spanish people, a lack of co-ordination, few supplies and growing British pressure, the achievement of Suchet under such circumstances is truly brilliant. A humble and moderate man, Suchet wrote his memoirs as he commanded in the field, with dash, brilliance, balance and poise.
