Martha's Vine

The Browning pistol lay across her right palm—a vile thing, evil in its silence. Martha's chest squeezed tight as a memory bubbled up. She struggled to take a breath. She fought the rising emotions, but still her hand shook. Engines roared in the distance. She glanced over her shoulder and then she looked up at her husband. He didn't know. He couldn't know. He would never know.
