One of Dostoevsky's short novellas, A Gentle Spirit, also called A Gentle Creature, is a heartbreaking tale of love and loss from of the world's masters of the written word.
Inspired by an article Dostoevsky read in 1876, the story recounts the tale of a pawnbroker who takes pity on a young governess and, to help her escape a planned marriage to a large oaf, offers to wed her himself.
What follows is a story of secrets, affairs, and suicide, creating what Dostoevsky called, a tale that "keeps haunting you for a long time."
