Jared Kopecek, M.D., grandson of a renowned psychiatrist-author-lecturer-teacher from the Midwest, begins his first year of Residency in Psychiatry at an institution in the Southwest. He is looking forward to settling down and marrying Stephanie, the love of his life.

Jared is assigned to a chronic psychiatric ward, and immediately recognizes not all is well there. Over objections interposed by the hospital's hierarchy, he delves into long-guarded disparities which have kept patients imprisoned there.

Bill, an amnestic young man, mysteriously appears on the steps of the hospital, and is assigned to Jared's ward. The young Dr. Kopecek attempts to learn his patient's identity, but is met with something medical school has not prepared him for. Bill speaks only in parables: "Call me what you will physician. I go by many names. It matters not what I am called, for I come to foretell what is to be in five score and two." Is all Bill foretells the product of a deranged mind, or is he a harbinger?
